Each year since 1996, the Palm Beach Longboarders Club has hosted the Palm Beach Old Mal Rally ... the main purpose of the contest is to raise money for charity, as well as competing for the fun of it. The aims stated for the inaugural comp, held Saturday March 23, 1996, were to promote sportsmanship, competition and traditional surfing. The winner on that day was Wollongong surfer, Bill Morris, who continues to return each year to enjoy the hospitality, and surf the Palmie waves. For the Old Mal Rally, boards surfed have to be over nine foot in length, and most importantly, constructed previous to 1966. These boards are generally much heavier than a modern longboard, and not nearly as user-friendly. The challenge of taming these beasts is what makes riding an old mal so much fun. The Golden Breed Old Mal Rally is usually held in November, so for further info, please contact one of the committee members. |
